For 1973, running our business in a sustainable way has always been important to us. From our inception in 2003 we have always strived to minimise our environmental impact where possible. From the very beginning we always sourced part-recycled or fully recycled papers for our designs and we maintain that to this day.
We’ve developed many eco collections over the years and where we lead, many have been quick to follow.
In 2007 we were one of the first businesses to introduce corn starch packaging to our greeting cards. Unfortunately we soon found out that the early designs were not yet fully perfected and perished within six months leaving just a trail of corn crumbs!
In 2008 we released a collection called Paper Nature with card made from 100% recycled waste which, in its raw state, resembled the inside of a toilet roll! However, through the addition of gorgeous colour and foil we brought the card to life and it quickly became one of our most popular ranges.
Having gained some market attention for our own eco collections, we started being approached by big brands to develop bespoke sustainable ranges for them. We worked with Oxfam and Paperchase to launch stationery designs made from recycling old wrapping paper designs. We also launched our own collection aptly named ‘I Love Being Recycled (I’ve done it once already!)’
In 2010 we commissioned our own paper to be made from 100% recycled waste and used it for our own 1973 ‘Grafika’ range and also a collaboration with the much loved brand ‘Sukie.’ Both gaining a real market buzz and quickly selling out, leaving us scrambling to reprint over and over again!
From those early days right through to the present we have strived to consider not only our environmental footprint but how to stay ahead of the green curve during each stage of planning. In a recent development, all our letter-pressed cards are printed using vintage Heidelberg presses on 100% recycled paper bearing the much-coveted Blue Angel Eco-accreditation. And now, all litho-printed cards are printed on FSC paper made in Sweden using chlorine-free sustainably produced virgin fibre from Scandinavian Birch forests with sound replanting schemes. The mill uses its own green energy to manufacture the paper and shares its surplus energy with the local community for grass roots projects.
All products are cello-free and almost all products except a few pieces of stationery and gift are 100% recyclable. A few of the products from Rifle Paper Co come with acrylic boxes and so do some boxed set of cards although we give you the option to just receive them naked. Brands such as Emma Cooter Draws however come with their own beautifully illustrated cardboard box!
As well as our own in-house printing, we work closely with fully accredited local printers who share our ethos.
But this is just the beginning and we are not perfect, as the planet heats up we will continue to do our bit to cool it down by constantly researching new and better ways of working and by keeping our foot on the green pedal.
